From the Cyber Hub to Your Own Business – What SMEs Can Learn from Israel
A German IT manager visits Tel Aviv and is amazed: in meetings, even non-technical people casually discuss password managers and security protocols. Back home, he wonders: Why can’t we have a security culture like that? What do Israelis do differently?
This concluding article in the series highlights lessons learned from Israel’s cybersecurity approach that can be transferred to German SMEs. You’ll see that some things can be implemented directly – without having to cross the Negev desert.
The Right Mindset for a Strong Security Culture
In Israel, awareness of threats is historically high – people are vigilant, but not anxious; rather, proactive. Translated to companies, this means: take cyber risks seriously, but view them as manageable. Looking the other way (“It’ll be fine”) is not an option.
Instead: regular risk checks, scenario thinking (“What if our server goes down?”), and open communication about security issues. A German SME can adopt this mindset immediately, with leadership clearly signaling: security is a priority, we take care of it, and everyone can and should contribute.
Agility and Willingness to Change in the Security Domain
Israeli companies don’t hesitate to cut old habits and introduce new technologies when they are convinced of their value. German SMEs should also be open to change: for example, moving more quickly to cloud services when they are safer and more efficient than outdated in-house servers.
Or replacing an outdated piece of software that no longer receives updates – even if one has grown accustomed to it. The courage to let go of beloved but insecure practices is a major step toward greater security.
Continuous Learning and Talent Development
Israel invests heavily in training IT talent – but also in continuous on-the-job learning. For an SME, this means: invest in your employees’ IT security skills.
This doesn’t have to be expensive – free online courses, participation in webinars, or regular knowledge sharing within the team (e.g., “Topic of the month: Secure passwords”) already help. You might discover hidden talents: the apprentice who tinkers with hacking in their spare time could become the perfect security officer.
In Israel, young talent is quickly given responsibility – trust your people too, and develop them accordingly.
Leveraging the Power of Networks and Cooperations
Israelis are masters of networking – within the industry and beyond. There’s a saying: “In Israel, everyone is only two corners away from each other.” Use this here too: network with other companies on security topics. Exchange experiences and share best practices.
Perhaps jointly invite a security expert for a workshop? Or put the topic of cyber on the agenda in your regional business circle. Learning together is faster – Israeli companies have long recognized this and maintain active exchange, even between competitors, when it comes to general threats.
Preparing for a Digital Emergency
The Israeli mentality is shaped by preparation for emergencies (military service, etc.). Translated: plan and practice the cyber emergency, even if you hope it never happens. Have you tested your data backups? Is there an emergency plan? Who is responsible for what if an attack occurs?
In Israel, companies conduct so-called “Red Team/Blue Team” exercises – one team simulates an attack, the other must detect and stop it. For SMEs, a tabletop exercise is enough: “Attack X happens – what do we do?” Such rehearsals enormously increase resilience, because in an emergency everyone knows: we have a plan, rather than everyone panicking.
In the end, it’s not about copying Israel one to one. But drawing inspiration and adapting good approaches – that is smart.
Practical recommendation: Pick one of the above points and implement it on a small scale. For example: next month, hold an internal workshop “Cyber incident – let’s rehearse this.” Or send your IT manager to an international cybersecurity conference (perhaps even Cyber Week Tel Aviv?). The new perspective will bring fresh ideas to your security strategy. Because if there’s one thing the Start-up Nation teaches, it’s that you can never stand still – Stay ahead of the threat!
