Leveraging Funding Programs – How the Government Helps SMEs with IT Security

Investing in cybersecurity is difficult for many small businesses. “We don’t have the budget for our own IT security infrastructure,” is a common refrain. But did you know that there are government funding programs that target exactly this? Imagine receiving a grant to make your company more secure – whether for consulting, software, or training. This article shows which programs are available and how you can benefit from them.
Overview: Funding for Cybersecurity in Germany
Both the federal government and the German states offer various funding opportunities to support SMEs with digitalization and IT security. Here is an overview of key programs:
“go-digital” from the Federal Ministry of Economics
This program funds consulting services for SMEs in the areas of IT security, digitalized business processes, and market development. For IT security, certified consulting firms can be commissioned; the government covers 50% of consulting costs (maximum grant of €16,500). This gives you expert support, for example in developing a security concept, at half the price.
Funding for Entrepreneurial Know-How (BAFA)
Small businesses (fewer than 250 employees) can receive a consulting grant via the Federal Office of Economics (BAFA). IT security falls under “general consulting.” The funding takes the form of a consulting voucher that covers a large portion of the costs.
Regional Funding Programs from German States
Digitalbonus and Digitalprämie
Many states have their own initiatives. For example, Bavaria’s Digitalbonus funds both the acquisition of IT security technology and corresponding services – with grants of up to €10,000 (or €50,000 in the “Digitalbonus Plus” variant for particularly innovative projects). Berlin offers the Digitalprämie (up to €17,000 grant) specifically for SMEs to improve, among other things, IT security.
State-Specific Programs for Digital Security
Other German states have similar programs, e.g., MID-Digital Security in NRW or the Digitalisierungsprämie in Baden-Württemberg. These regional funding opportunities are often particularly attractive as they are tailored to local conditions.
Financing Options Through KfW
KfW Loans for IT Security Investments
Through KfW, low-interest loans such as the ERP Digitization and Innovation Loan can be applied for, which also cover investments in IT security. These financing options are particularly suitable for larger investments.
Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM)
The ZIM also funds IT security developments – interesting if you want to develop or deploy innovative solutions yourself. This program is aimed at research-active companies developing new security solutions.
Tips for Successfully Applying for Funding
The funding landscape is diverse. Important: requirements often apply (e.g., company size, previously received funding) and an application must be submitted, sometimes even before the project begins. Don’t be put off by this – many applications are now online and simplified.
Practical tip: Get informed early. The website of the National Coordination Center for Cybersecurity (NKCS) provides an overview of such programs. Your local Chamber of Commerce (IHK) or Chamber of Crafts can also help. Take advantage of these financial aids – they reduce costs and lower the barrier to investing in your company’s security.
